About this course

This module provides essential information upon which key technical decisions regarding the fitness for use of manufactured batches can be properly made.

These decisions may involve:

• Cross-contamination
• Patient risk
• Product quality
• Operator risk
• Facility design
• Ways of working (campaign, segregation, etc)

Without a sound knowledge of the chemistry and mode of action of active ingredients and medicinal products, the Qualified Person is unable to make reasoned, scientifically sound judgements in these important areas.

• Cell structure and function
• Human physiology and body functions
• Introduction to the nervous system
• Introduction to the heart and cardiovascular system

Major Disease States

• Review of disease states that can affect the body, e.g.
  • Heart
  • Respiratory tract
  • Inflammatory diseases
  • Gastro-intestinal tract
  • Diseases of the CNS

Medicinal Products and How they Affect the Body

• Basis of drug therapy – receptor theory
• The autonomic nervous system
• Classification of medicinal substances by therapeutic area:
  • Respiratory
  • Gastro-intestinal
  • Cardiovascular
  • Endocrine
  • CNS
  • Musculoskeletal and joint disease
  • Anaesthesia
  • Pharmacological effects

Other Relevant Issues

• Adulteration and cross-contamination
• Cleaning and cleaning validation - approaches for a multi-product facility

Discussion and Working Groups

A significant proportion of the course time will be devoted to group work, where delegates have the opportunity, through case studies, to put theory into practice.

Additionally, discussion periods, including a course trainer panel session, provide delegates with an opportunity to obtain answers to their specific questions and concerns.
