Letter from DG SANCO on API importation into the EU
Tuesday the 25th June 2013
On 19 June the Director General (DG SANCO) of the European Commission, Mrs Paola Testori Coggi, sent a letter to several European trade associations (EGA, EFPIA, EUCOPE and AESGP) on the subject of API importation into the EU post 2 July 2013.
In this letter Mrs Coggi assures the trade groups that the Commission takes industry concerns (regarding potential shortages of medicines due to APIs not being available) very seriously. The Commission urges all stakeholders to immediately report any potential risk of shortages of medicines due to the lack of availability of API to European and national authorities.
The letter ends by stating “We shall continue to liaise with all Member States to ensure a smooth, viable application of the incoming rules and to engage with third country authorities to support the timely issuing of the written confirmations”.
